How Progressive Groupthink Turns Monsters Into Victims and Perverts the Law

The modern left’s obsession with progressive groupthink, moral relativism, and “diversity, equity, and inclusion” (DEI) initiatives has ceased to be a mere ideological exercise. It has become an active threat to truth, justice, and the rule of law.

When objective facts are discarded in favor of subjective “feelings,” culture devolves into a system where those who shout the loudest determine who is a victim and who is a monster. Nowhere is this inversion of morality clearer than in how activist media, progressive lawyers, and biased juries handle high-profile criminal cases—turning cold-blooded murderers into sympathetic martyrs while trampling on the memory of actual victims.

DEI Meets Death Row: The Inversion of Justice

Consider the recent case of Christa Pike in Tennessee. In 1995, an 18-year-old Pike lured 19-year-old Job Corps student Colleen Slemmer into the woods, slashed her throat, cracked her skull with asphalt, and carved a pentagram into her flesh. She then kept a piece of Slemmer’s skull as a trophy and bragged that the dark spots on her shoes were blood, not mud. Years later in prison, she attempted to murder another inmate with a shoelace.

Yet, as her long-overdue execution approached, the discourse shifted. Pike’s legal team weaponized DEI rhetoric, demanding special accommodations—specifically requesting an all-female execution team to shield her from “trauma” due to her past abuse history. Tennessee obliged, elevating identity politics above the solemn administration of justice.

When her execution was botched after two failed attempts to administer lethal injection—leaving Pike hospitalized in critical condition—the media narrative instantly shifted into a soap opera of victimhood. Pike’s anxiety, her small veins, and her physical discomfort dominated headlines, while the horrific details of Colleen Slemmer’s death were quietly pushed aside. No one was there to ferry Colleen Slemmer to a hospital on that freezing night in 19195; her brutalized body was left so disfigured a groundskeeper mistook it for a dead animal. Yet, through the lens of modern progressivism, the state’s failure to execute a condemned killer is treated with more public grief than the heinous crime that put her on death row in the first place.

“My Truth” vs. The Evidence: The Weaponization of the Jury Box

This phenomenon is not isolated to death row; it infects courtroom deliberations across the nation. The standard of objective truth—governed by physical evidence and the rule of law—is routinely subverted by jurors who view their role not as impartial fact-finders, but as social justice warriors.

Take the case of Lindsay Clancy in Massachusetts, accused of strangling her three young children with exercise bands. Despite the defense acknowledging that she committed the physical acts, progressives turned the trial into a ideological crusade. Following a recent mistrial, one juror openly admitted that the panel saw the case as a “turning point” to “make it better for other women in the future.”

├──────────────────────────────────────────────────┤

│ 1. IDEOLOGY      ➔ Define perpetrators as “oppressed” based on identity. │

│ 2. REFORMULATION ➔ Discard physical evidence; elevate “my truth.”     │

│ 3. MOB ACTIVISM  ➔ Loudly shout down dissenters & demonize victims.     │

│ 4. SUBVERSION    ➔ Turn trial deliberations into social justice crusades. │

When jurors enter a court seeking social reform rather than legal truth, the justice system collapses. A jury’s sole constitutional mandate is to apply the law to the evidence beyond a reasonable doubt. When sympathy for a defendant’s gender or perceived societal oppression replaces the legal standard, justice becomes arbitrary.

Worse still is the mob rule that accompanies this mindset. When the factual narrative does not match the progressive script, internet activists invent absurd conspiracy theories. In Clancy’s case, when the evidence clearly showed her actions, online mobs turned their wrath on her grieving husband, Patrick Clancy—inventing baseless claims that he committed the murders himself. Under this moral barometer, a grieving father is vilified while a woman who strangled her children is shielded under the banner of collective empathy.

The Danger of Loud-Volume Relativism

This “they who shout loudest win” strategy relies entirely on moral relativism. When a society decides that 95% of biologists agreeing that life begins at fertilization can be ignored in favor of personal convenience, or that biological sex is a fluid concept, objective reality disappears.

When objective reality is gone, power dictates truth:

  1. The Fallacy of “My Truth”: Elevating subjective feelings to the status of fact destroys the foundation for rational debate.
  1. The Erasure of Personal Responsibility: Under progressive groupthink, individuals are rarely held accountable for their actions; instead, they are cast as perpetual victims of systemic circumstances.
  1. Mob Rule over Constitutional Order: When noise, social media campaigns, and activist pressure dictate legal outcomes, democracy is replaced by the tyranny of the loudest crowd.

As Flannery O’Connor famously wrote, “The truth does not change according to our ability to stomach it emotionally.”

A society that allows progressive groupthink to dictate its legal and moral standards is a society on a collision course with lawlessness. It is time to reject the delusion that feelings override facts, restore the primacy of individual accountability, and ensure that the law exists to protect innocent victims—not to comfort convicted monsters.
